The 145,500 square foot facility was developed from the newly adopted Middle School Education Specifications, developed by the Rapid City Area School District with the assistance of Upper Deck Architects. The design of East Middle School will act as a prototype for middle school facilities for the District. This LEED Silver equivalent facility includes a geothermal heating/cooling system and many other sustainable design features. The school opened in the Fall of 2012.
